When a consumer buys a product or service they can feel safe and empowered in the knowledge that if anything goes wrong there are expert and influential organisations ready to fight in their corner.
The OFT
The Office of Fair Trading was established in 1973 and is now well recognised as the UK’s consumer and competition authority. It is a non-ministerial government department focused on maintaining a fair and consumer friendly marketplace.
It aids consumers by empowering them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and get the most out of their marketplace. It also endeavours to make sure that consumers have as much choice across the marketplace as possible, believing that with choice they hold real power.
Consumer Direct was formerly operated by the OFT but was replaced by the Citizens Advice consumer service in 2012.
Consumer Direct
Consumer Direct was a telephone and internet service that provided people with advice and information regarding consumer issues until 2012. It was funded by the OFT and produced in collaboration with Local Authority Trading Services.
Consumer Direct is a ground level service that connects with consumers on a one-to-one basis, absorbing information and intelligence that it then used to inform the efforts and campaigns of the OFT and Local Authority Trading Standards Services.
Consumer Direct previously offered clear, practical and unbiased advice on resolving consumer problems, but this service is now provided by the Citizens Advice consumer service.

Tell us what went wrong and find out which ombudsman or regulator can help, whether it is worth escalating, and exactly how to take your complaint further.
Try our Which Ombudsman Do I Need? free, here on this site →Single Contact Point
The advice is free but as the telephone service operates on a 0845 number callers must pay for each call they make. Consumer Direct’s reasoning for using a paid number is that it allows them to publicise one single recognisable national number, rather than a confusing variety of regional numbers.
This helps promote the grand Consumer Direct design of providing single contact point where basic enquiries can be dealt with immediately and more specialist issues referred the appropriate Trading Standards office.
Local Authority Trading Standards Services
The efforts of Trading Standards in sustaining and improving consumer protection, and maintaining fair trading and the safety of consumer goods, are represented by around 200 local council offices around the UK.
Trading Standards provides a wealth of information regarding customer problems and how to resolve them. It also informs consumers about their rights so that they can support their claims.
Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.
Specialist Trade Associations and Regulatory Bodies
If complaint concerns the services or products of a trader that is a member of a trade association, or one regulated by a professional body, then the overseeing authority may well be able to offer guidance in dealing with the problem.
Within the trading sector there are a great number of different associations to refer to depending on the type of service. For example there is a Hairdressing Council and a Radio, Electrical and Television Retailers’ Association. A list of associations is provided on the Trading Standards website. If this does not provide the appropriate regulatory body then the Citizens Advice Bureau will always be able to help.
First Steps
There are many different organisations that can help a complaint find its resolution but a problem should always be first of all taken to the service provider directly responsible. Many companies have their own complaints procedures and customer service departments that are focused on resolving customer problems, and most are a solved in this manner.
I presented my returns item 'wrapped' to my local post office counters who weighed the item at 88grams and confirmed 1st class postage to designated address would be £1.80.
Yet Sports Direct want to charge me £4.50?
Upon learning this and further examination of their website and returns policy, that items ordered online cannot be returned to my local, any, Sports Direct store?
This is the first time that I have ordered anything online from any retailer that prevents you returning the item to one of its local stores. So in my experience this an extremely unusual practice and certainly one that doesn't serve the customer, treat customers fairly.
Can you please confirm if deliberate preventing of a customer returning items to a physical store, is in breach of my rights and, sales of goods act and Office of Fair Trading principles/charter.
That a multibillion £ industry doesn't understand the basic principle of putting the customer at the centre of its operations is beyond me. Out of principle I wish to escalating this matter to the Office of Fair Trade via Consumer Direct as companies should be responsible for the length of their value chain, including customer receiving the goods they have ordered at the location they have provided
Basically a female manager, banned me knowing I was going to complain about her. As she was verbally rude to me. . I initially asked if her if Aldi sold Sponge cake. She hatefully and aggressively answered back saying “ What did you say , I can’t understand what you’re saying”. I’m a minority in the town of Deal and a man of colour. I’m not one to play the race card but it does make you think. I hope for humanity her reaction wasn’t because of that.
Next day I went shopping there. The male manager on that day, plucked me from the queue asking me in a bolshy manner to leave the shop as I have been banned. This was highly humiliating.
I asked what for? He said aggressive verbal behaviour from the day before. Which was a blatant fabrication. Apparently there were witnesses which happened to be Aldi staff.
Hand on the Bible, I was not verbally aggressive in any way whatsoever.
This was in May. There was meant to be a review on the 1st August. I had to phone and write to them. I was totally ignored by area manager whom had asked me to get in touch They decided to remain with the ban?? Although I’d not been near the shop and kept my side of the bargain. They now say I’m banned for life. Yet I can visit other Aldi stores??
Til this day after many requests. Aldi have not sent me anything in writing to say why I was banned. Or any statements on their side telling what exactly I’m supposed to of done or said.
I feel my returning would be too awkward for them. As they know I have been persistent in my innocence.
What can I do?
I am concerned about my local shop in Girdle Toll Irvine Ayrshire it is a cost cutter
This store has overcharged me on the last three times that I have visited it and I have been checking my purchases each time and every time he has overcharged me each time
He just doesn’t seem to care
This store is right next to sheltered house’s and I am concerned that he is doing this to the people that stay in there
My son came in last night and I could not believe he was also overcharged on two occasions it also has stock that is out of date
I will definitely not go back to this store
He tried to fob me off by saying he’d scan an item twice which of course complete nonsense. Can anyone give me any information on who to report this to because I don’t want him ripping off the local community and getting away with it.
Thanks in advance.
a,s best I could the story with good well documented fact's. This farce has been ongoing until the LA department said we are not going to discuss it any more
in essence tough.
As a tax payer I found this to be a breech of my rights, so contacted the LGSCO.
My first telephone contact with them, found the guy to be pretty flat and disinterested this followed within a pretty quick time, I received an email and a copy of the so called decision we won't be investigating !.
I wrote requesting they REVIEW their decision "my reason I had given them full facts from me yet nothing more than a this was dealt reply from the LA, I rang again but was put through to a lady for a better explanation she was as eager as the first person, quite bullish saying I was given their answer "which basically was nothing ! she did however carry on talking at me saying "oh we were told by the department at the LA" I was complaining about, Saying this was all dealt with and informed me THEY suggested I WAS LYING.
It beggars belief I give pages of FACTS about poor treatment from Bristol City Council they say"oh it's been dealt and he's a liar ? SO WE WONT BE INVESTIGATING ALBEIT A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE.
I AM SURE AS YOUR WEB SITE WRITES AS IT'S A LOCAL AUTHORITY THEY WON'T INVESTIGATE IT'S LIKE ASKING THE DODGY POLICEMAN TO INVESTIGATE THE DODGY POLICEMAN.
Burles.
Thanks
I sold my phone to a company called IPhone Recycler through Sell The Mobile website. I sent my phone special delivery and had a confirmation email that it arrived on Saturday (18th August 2018) and they stated it was with the technicians but they needed my code to unlock the phone. The website states they send payment within the day of receiving the handset. Since then, it has been 4 days and they have not answered any of my email updates, phone calls and the contact number on their website rings through to a travel agency’s. I believe this to be fraud and they have effectively stolen my phone and I have received no money whatsoever and I have no idea how to proceed?
Can anyone help?

I gave my laptop for repairing on 6th march and there by asked them to fix it by 9th as I had flight on the next day. They promised but didnt send me my lappy on that day so I myself had to tk trouble and get my lappy. These people didn't refund my courier money and even charged £350 for it.
I found my laptop on 10th but yet they haven't given me invoice. I have a doubt that these people have taken advantage of my urgency and there by charged me heavily. I am begging for my invoice and they aren't giving it to me. Please tell me what should I do
Littlewoods; spend £60 get £30 discount I ordered a pair of shoes costing £60 in December put the code in when I checked out & the shoes totalled £30. I received my statement in January staying I owed them £30 & paid the balance off in full. In May I received a statement that said I was in debt by £30 but no details. I had to telephone customer services 3 times every time i was told a staff member would look into and ring me back instead I received emails with totally incorrect information regarding why my account had been debited with the £30 eventually I found an number for their customer excellence team, where I was given the correct reason as to why my account had debited. I was told that I had entered the code incorrectly and I was therefore not entitled to the discount, I was furious as I would not have entered the code incorrectly and if for some reason I had surely their system would not have accepted the code . How can they decide this 5 months after I have received the order an debit my account, as I explained if the voucher had been declined at the point of sale, I would not have gone ahead with the order. I have been told that there is nothing they can do as I cannot provide the code I used for the discount. I have written to the CEO, finance director & 2 other senior members of staff to request my account be credited & it closed but as yet not heard back. Is there an ombudsman I can contact to take it further. It is the principle that i find disgusting as how many other people have experienced the same!
I purchased two items (the same item in two sizes) from an online clothing retailer just before Christmas, when I emailed the company to request a return label as one wasn't included (which is unusual), they informed me I was out of their 7 day refund policy...I hadn't actually received the product myself until the 7 day policy expired due to the Christmas period and bank holidays etc. I informed them firstly I was surprised they hadn't extended their refund policy like 99% of other companies over the festive period and secondly it wasn't that the items didn't fit or I didn't like them, I was disappointed with the quality of the items. I was then informed I was two days out of the return policy but the management would be in touch with me as they could see I had ordered the same product in two sizes. This was 3rd Jan, I have sent 5 emails since and the only reply I have received is to say "a member of the customer service team will be in touch"... I'm not sure how to progress this complaint and the company are refusing to communicate with me? The company seems unprofessional and there isn't a number or chat issue on the website.
Thanks
thank you
Myself and from what i can see from various facebook posts,im not the only one to deal with this rude man!someone else posed two and had 400 plus likes amd comments for this said man..he calls peoples children fat ,tells my son hes heads to big for the jumpers amd that ot must be hereditory that his big..that my son has a big belly and should go for a run before i take him in again!my sons three!!some of the comments ive heard from other parents are disgraceful..i would like to know where i could go or who to speak to in regards to this going further.surely its not right or acceptable for a 50 plus something man and owner of store to speak to customers and their children like that
Your advice would be much appreciated.
I ordered some items online from a high street sports store, I ordered quite a lot as I'd bought various sizes - so I always had the intention of returning some of the items.
I was going into town on a Sunday so I took the items with me that I didn't want so I could get a refund.
I was told at the cash desk that they did not offer refunds and I would only be offered a credit note or exchange. I had nothing to exchange for the items and so really I wanted a refund. I asked the girl whether I would get a refund if I returned the items by post as they were an online purchase and she said no, the company does not provide refunds. so most disgruntled I had to accept a credit note.
I was then most annoyed when I got home and decided to look online at the returns policy that I would have gotten a full refund had I posted the items back. It was for £151 so anyone in their right mind would take a refund over a credit note - especially as I'd clearly ordered multiples of the same items.
I've complained to the company and after numerous emails they are refusing to accept any blame at all or even apologise! the latest email is that I know their returns policy because I've bought from them before. I personally don't care what I've done before I was told the wrong information and because of this I am significantly out of pocket.
Please please can someone advise me on what I can do and how I can take this further
thank you
Can anyone help I bought an item for my one year old it was apparently in the sale but when I looked at my inbox it was back to full price. This was the same for all of the items I put in there! I still bought one item as it was a gift and I liked it but not at the discounted price shown there. I originally left it at that. Then I had an email from the company about new items spent ages during my daughters nap time putting some items in the box only to find at the end my basket was empty! I did this several times! I phoned the company and got a young lady who said they had problems with sale items but not know this new problem and again left it at that. Then I had another email saying I had left some items in my basket so I clicked on it nothing happened! I then emailed company and it went on from there the guy who eventually emailed back blamed me and my computer cookies! He was rude and quite frankly sycastic! When I had another email asking me to write a review I then did. And gave a bad review it wasn't the product although it should of been in the sale it was the rudeness i recieved afterwards. As I put a bad review the guy phoned with his personal mobile and sent me an email saying he will give me 25% off any new products if I changed my review! Is this not bribery?!? I don't mind adding to the review but i can't change the customer service I had recieved anyway after further emails he retracted his offer and wished me good luck if I took it further! Is there anyone I can report him to?!? I see it's not an isolated case as another reviewer complained about being bribed! All I want is a genuine apology not sycastic emails or bribery and the price my item was shown at! Which I happen to take a picture off in the sale as he sweated blind it was my cookies that I hadn't cleared!! He is really rude and whilst its a nice gesture to give a discount this should not be so I fabricate a better review! He even admitted on the phone investors look at it so he wanted me to amend it! And sent me links as to how the customer is NOT always right! Please tell me there is someone I can report him to! This kind of behaviour is not nice!
I usually buy my gas on card from them 120 pound a month, they have refused me paying by card as they only get 50p for me using it and request that I take the money out their cash point machine at a 1.75 charge so they get more, when I refused they refused to serve me for gas unless I had cash.
I have been short changed on may occasions and even charged for previous customers shopping when I've not realised.
My most recent one is that my gas card wouldn't work so my company advised me to go to the local shop, give them a number and they would give me a gas card. They totally refused telling me that I would have to get it from town as it wasn't their fault it didn't work.
As shops all closed in town I am now left with a cold family including a 5 year old it's snowing outside and no gas.
Am not happy with this service at all and would really like to know where I can complain too. It is just a one off local shop
It is suggested the regulatory authority should put a ceiling on delivery charges according to the price of the product.

Rude staff put phone down on my wife too when trying to advise them the matter has been addressed. I have contacted the head office and await a response.
I ordered a dress from Rare London, and returned it to them straight away for a refund at around the start of june. I read the refund proccess which confirmed it takes 10 working days for refund. 10 working days passed and I still hadnt got my refund, so i left a comment on their website as they dont have a contact num however never got a reply. I finally got my refund way after the 10 working day timescale, but still no reply to my message left.
I then contact them via twitter to which they replied straight away telling me to direct message them with all the information which I did and still got no reply. I then sent them further direct messages and tweets and still nothing. I am desperate to complain because there service is disgracful but theres no way of me doing this because they just ignore my messages.
Hope you can help
Eve Hamer
If I don't hear anything in two weeks I am going to call Trading Standards.
Thankyou
